Old Jaipur is a classic example of cities characterised by an innate response to local resources and climate. Climatic factor plays a leading role in the definition of a built habitat in places with a very harsh climate. The close-knit urban structure of the Jaipur city permeates all considerations of minimising the effect of the sun and dust.
The tilt of the city, 17˚ east of north is an attempt to minimise the solar radiation falling on the vertical surfaces of the buildings. The construction of houses is such that it maximises the use of common walls which are not exposed to the climate. This helps in reducing the surface area to volume ratio of the built form.
